Alidou replaces injured Lacasse for Canadian women’s friendly in Spain

Marie-Yasmine Alidou has been called in to replace the injured Cloe Lacasse ahead of the Canadian women’s international friendly in Spain on Friday.

The sixth-ranked Canadians face No. 3 Spain, the reigning World Cup champions, at Estadio Francisco de la Hera in Almendralejo.

Lacasse was forced to leave in the 36th minute of the Utah Royals’ 1-1 draw at Angel City FC on Sunday with an apparent knee injury. The 31-year-old from Sudbury, Ont., was coming off a three-goal performance in a 3-0 win over Seattle Reign, the first hat-trick in Utah Royals history and the first in the 2024 NWSL season.

Alidou, a 29-year-old from Saint-Hubert, Que., who plays in Portugal for Benfica, has two Canadian senior caps already.

Europa League Roundup: Aston Villa routs Bologna to set up all-English semifinal

Ollie Watkins scored again as Aston Villa knocked out Bologna out of the Europa League in a 4-0 rout Thursday to set up an all-English semifinal against Nottingham Forest. Unai Emery’s team reached its second European semifinal in three seasons with a 7-1 aggregate victory. Watkins had netted twice in last week’s 3-1 win in the first leg of the quarterfinal in Italy, and the striker set the pace at Villa Park. He tapped in a low cross from the left provided by Morgan Rogers for a 1-0 lead after 16 minutes for his 100th goal for Villa. Rogers had a golden opportunity to increase the lead but Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia saved his penalty kick. Only a minute later, though, Villa doubled its lead when Emiliano Buendía scored from a tight angle.
