AFC Toronto forward Amanda West returned to Houston Dash after suffering knee injury

AFC Toronto forward Amanda West, on loan from the Houston Dash, has returned to her NWSL team to undergo surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

A Toronto spokesman said the non-contact injury happened during a closed-door exhibition game during pre-season. West was a spectator for Toronto’s Northern Super League debut, a 1-0 loss to Montreal Roses FC at BMO Field last Saturday

West, who was born in Sweden to Canadian parents, was on loan to Toronto through Aug. 18. Toronto plays at the Ottawa Rapid on Saturday.

There was more Canadian-related injury news for Houston with defender Allysha Chapman placed on the 45-day injury list with an arm injury sustained in training earlier this month.

Europa League Roundup: Aston Villa routs Bologna to set up all-English semifinal

Ollie Watkins scored again as Aston Villa knocked out Bologna out of the Europa League in a 4-0 rout Thursday to set up an all-English semifinal against Nottingham Forest. Unai Emery’s team reached its second European semifinal in three seasons with a 7-1 aggregate victory. Watkins had netted twice in last week’s 3-1 win in the first leg of the quarterfinal in Italy, and the striker set the pace at Villa Park. He tapped in a low cross from the left provided by Morgan Rogers for a 1-0 lead after 16 minutes for his 100th goal for Villa. Rogers had a golden opportunity to increase the lead but Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia saved his penalty kick. Only a minute later, though, Villa doubled its lead when Emiliano Buendía scored from a tight angle.
