French Cup Roundup: PSG begins title defence with easy win over minnow

PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain started its French Cup defence with a 4-0 win at fifth-tier Vendée Fontenay to reach the last 32 on Saturday.

Gonçalo Ramos scored twice while star forwards Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué netted once for record 16-time champion PSG in a match at the stadium of Ligue 1 side Nantes.

There were no upsets as top-tier sides Lille, Lorient, Metz, Paris FC and Toulouse all advanced, with Jonathan Ikoné scoring a hat trick in PFC’s 3-0 win against minnow Raon-l’Étape.

Third-tier Avranches knocked out Ligue 1 side Brest on Friday.

Europa League Roundup: Aston Villa routs Bologna to set up all-English semifinal

Ollie Watkins scored again as Aston Villa knocked out Bologna out of the Europa League in a 4-0 rout Thursday to set up an all-English semifinal against Nottingham Forest. Unai Emery’s team reached its second European semifinal in three seasons with a 7-1 aggregate victory. Watkins had netted twice in last week’s 3-1 win in the first leg of the quarterfinal in Italy, and the striker set the pace at Villa Park. He tapped in a low cross from the left provided by Morgan Rogers for a 1-0 lead after 16 minutes for his 100th goal for Villa. Rogers had a golden opportunity to increase the lead but Bologna goalkeeper Federico Ravaglia saved his penalty kick. Only a minute later, though, Villa doubled its lead when Emiliano Buendía scored from a tight angle. Rogers made it 3-0 with another angled shot in the 39th, and Ezri Konsa finished the scoring seconds before the final whistle.
